Life with a four year old is chock full of “ding dang” moments. If there are several pairs of shoes for her to wear and you suggest a particular pair – oh my gosh, the whining that ensues because “ding dang, you chose the wrong thang”. If we announce that we are going to Portillo’s for take out dinner (as we did last night), she begins dramatically expressing her preference for fish & chips. My hubby and I just look at each other, smile and say “ding dang”.
You might wonder why we don’t just suggest the thing that we DON’T want her to chose. Oh, if it were that simple! You see, four year olds have an innate sense of when you are trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Just like a dog smells fear, they know when reverse psychology is being used. Then you are stuck really getting fish & chips and she’s wearing shoes covered in dog poop because you thought you were gonna be clever. That’s known as a “double ding dang”.
No, you must stick to your guns and suggest the thing that you truly want. If you want it bad enough you will endure the whining, and the child will eventually realize who’s the BOSS. On the other hand, you may decide that where you eat or what shoes she wears are not really all that important — considering all the “ding dang” events that lie ahead.
